Professor Richard Wiseman of the University of Hertfordshire is the leading academic researcher studying luck.
He has spent his career trying to understand the difference between lucky people and unlucky people, and has discovered that there are very specific things that lucky people can do to increase their good luck.
Most importantly, he has also discovered that we can create more luck for ourselves by changing the way we think and behave.
Increasing luck is not about manifesting a vision or maintaining a relentless positive attitude
Or repeating what we want over and over again until it magically appears. Just as we can consciously choose to put ourselves in a flow state, a meditative state, or a state of love, we can also put ourselves in a state of luck which then affects our behavior and therefore some outcomes.
In this article, you will learn the four ways to increase luck.
Wiseman took these four principles and turned them into a “Luck School,” teaching unlucky people how to change their luck.
In total, 80% of the people who attended said their luck had increased, and on average, they estimated their luck had increased by more than 40%.
#1: Look for (and seize) opportunities
Lucky people have cultivated a particular skill for noticing and then seizing opportunities. They tend to notice subtle opportunities and then find a way to take advantage of them.
Most people who describe themselves as lucky tend to be outgoing, optimistic, and most importantly, open-minded.
If you keep your sense of curiosity alive and active at all times, you can see things that other people might miss. One of Wiseman’s studies found that lucky people smile twice as much and make more eye contact than unlucky people. That social interaction often leads to new opportunities for them.
One quick way to do this is to change up your daily routine and put yourself in new environments or new experiences
Another is to say yes to things you would normally turn down. As we get older, we tend to accumulate wisdom, which makes us feel like we have the answers to life and know how it will play out; by consciously adopting an open mindset, we can try to remain more open to surprises and moments when our luck might change.
#2: Follow Your Gut
Lucky people listen to their instincts and act on what they hear. They tune in and wonder how something feels, and use any insights to inform their decisions.
They also consciously work to strengthen that ability by testing their hunches, learning from them, and finding ways to “listen” to them more effectively, such as through meditation or creating mental space.
#3: Expect Good Things
Lucky people expect life to be full of good things. Because of that belief, they tend to put themselves out there more, as they believe they will get what they want and are not ashamed to ask for it. This translates into raising your hand for opportunities, asking for what you want, and standing up for yourself—all of which have very positive outcomes.
(If you’re having trouble feeling this, remember that luck is also a matter of perspective. Someone somewhere thinks you’re the luckiest person in the world. If you’re having trouble seeing that right now, put yourself in their shoes and imagine what it would be like to look back on your life with that kind of wonder and gratitude.)
#4: Find ways to turn bad luck into good
And when bad things inevitably happen to them, lucky people find a way to turn them into something positive. They tell themselves how much worse it could have been, try to control what they can about the situation, and practice their resilience skills to cope more effectively.
Wiseman’s experiments are not the only example that mindset has extraordinary power
Many studies have shown that if you act as if something were true, you can make some of that truth come true.
A famous experiment by Ellen Langer at Harvard brought eight 70-year-old men from a nursing home into an environment designed to look exactly like their lives 20 years earlier. She asked them to pretend they were 20 years younger.
After a week, they showed improvements in strength, posture, memory, perception, cognition, hearing, and vision. Four independent volunteers looked at before-and-after photos of the experiment and rated those in the «after» photos as being an average of two years younger than those in the «before» photos.
In her book, she writes that the men, some of whom had entered the study house needing canes, spent their last morning playing an impromptu game of soccer on the front lawn. Obviously, there are some very real limits to what mindset can do, but mindset can do a lot.
Pay Attention to Invisible Luck
One aspect of your luck that you can’t control is one of the most influential in your life’s outcome: the circumstances into which you are born. In America, this is an extremely urgent and tragic problem.
Studies have shown that the family we are born into, our birth order, the neighborhoods we live in, the schools we attend, and our race and gender all greatly influence our life outcomes.
For example, one study found that 74% of wealthy teenagers who scored in the top quadrant in math earned a four-year college degree; but only 41% of poorer students with the same high math scores did so.
This “invisible luck” promotes a horrible myth that only the worthy succeed
This myth is particularly exacerbated alongside the American dream argument that it only takes hard work and talent to get ahead, when in fact, there are so many things affecting us that we are not aware of.
When we forget our fortune, our psychological biases make us start to believe that everything good in our life is due to something special in us, rather than something special in our fortunate birth circumstances.
This creates a feeling of superiority in people who have been the luckiest. For example, people from higher socioeconomic classes have been found to be less attuned to the suffering of other people.
Taken together, we have a society where people who were born lucky can easily come to believe that they have earned their good fortune through their talents, look down on people who were unlucky and treat them with less compassion, and continue to perpetuate the myth that individual effort is all that matters for success in life.
It is essential that we practice gratitude for the external conditions that made our lives what they are
In doing so, we acknowledge that we are the beneficiaries of great good fortune and we remember all the external things over which we had no control that made it that way.

I want to add a final principle, a fifth one, to Dr. Wiseman’s list: find a way to make others lucky.
Once you recognize how much good luck you have had, it becomes natural to want to find a way to increase the luck of others. Were you lucky enough to attend an amazing school where you learned something special? Find a way to teach those things to others.
Do you have a job that many people would dream of?
Mentor others and help them get it too. There are millions of ways you can make other people lucky.
Your guidance, your time, your presence, your expertise, or your kindness may be the luckiest thing someone else ever receives, something that changes their life forever.

I’m not sure I believe there’s a deity of good fortune who doles out good and bad luck, or even that there’s a predestined path our lives will take.
But I do believe we can create conditions where luck seems to work in our favor. Some people call this creating your own luck.
Seneca gives us a clue as to how we can do this:
“Luck happens when preparation meets opportunity.”
It’s not about sitting back and waiting for good fortune to fall into our lap, but about setting the stage so that when luck does strike, we’re ready to recognize and seize that opportunity.
The underlying premise is, of course, that we can change the course of our lives by what we believe and how we act, and especially by the choices we make.
So what does luck have to do with career change?
- That Thing Called Luck
What exactly do I mean by “luck”?
In researching definitions of luck, these words came up repeatedly:
chance
happenstance
unexpected gain
discovery
providence
There is an element of accident or
unforeseenness here: something that happens to you by good fortune, whether you deserve it or have worked for it or not. And how exactly we can work to improve our luck – that is the part of the equation I want to look at.
Can we actually influence how lucky we are in our career change?
I think so, because it is by being active in a relevant and useful space that a stroke of luck is most likely to come our way.
- Setting yourself up for better luck
Chance encounters have been central to each of my three career changes, but if I had not been in the right place at the right time by choice, those chance encounters would not have taken place.
When I was retraining as a career guidance professional in my early 50s, I decided to attend a careers conference in Dubai, where I was living at the time. My aim was to pick up on the latest ideas, better understand the challenges other professionals were facing, get a better idea of the local career landscape and start building a good network of professionals working in this field. I was able to gather a lot of information and meet some interesting people.
But the biggest success came as a result of a chance meeting in the lift.
I always talk to people in a lift and I am so glad I did because I left with a brilliant new contact who worked at a local university. By the end of the conference we had had a couple more conversations and exchanged contact details. The following week I was contacted and invited to meet the director of the university. They were about to set up a new careers guidance service and wanted to discuss ideas with me.
Yes, I prepared well for this meeting, although I was also very aware that I had no experience in careers guidance apart from the postgraduate degree I was about to complete.
The next day I was offered the opportunity to set up and manage their new careers guidance service. That was the best outcome for an interview I didn’t know I was going to attend!
So there was definitely an element of luck in landing this new position – the chance meeting in the elevator
But part of it was because, as Seneca said, I had prepared myself by committing to studying, attending a conference on my new profession, making new contacts and being open to chance encounters.
And that’s how preparation and opportunity can collide – with very favorable results.
To generate more luck, try
– Meet people in the position you want to fill and find out what everyday life is really like (*my guide to interviewing – Research and shadow organizations that have a culture, mission, and values that fit with yours
– Volunteer, study, or work part-time in fields that appeal to you and that you enjoy
– Dive deeper into a hobby, passion, topic, or new idea that really energizes and engages you – be active in this world, develop and hone your skills
– Seek opportunities to be in the company of people who share your values and interests, who boost your energy, and are open to ideas
When you are active and engaged in these spaces, you are laying the groundwork and the chances of a stroke of good luck coming your way just increased.
- Shape your experience to make it an easy YES for them
Another way to increase your chances of landing the job you want at the organization you think you can thrive in is to present your experience and accomplishments in a way that is easy for them to say YES. Clearly:
- Credible
- Relevant
- Compelling
Your responsibility when applying for a new role is to understand what they really need, what the main problems are that your target role will solve, and how YOU can provide the solution they are looking for.
Even if you don’t have direct experience in the role, field or sector, you can demonstrate how your career so far has allowed you to grow, achieve success, and that you will bring the same commitment and enthusiasm to this role.
Gather the most relevant success stories from your work history and link them to the required skills or goals that the role will focus on.
By demonstrating your past successes, you will be establishing your professional credibility. If your research has given you a good understanding of the organisation’s current challenges and ambitions and you can link your history of success to them, you will be seen as relevant. When you believe in it and make the connections, your story will be compelling.
How can you connect the dots for potential employers?
- Know yourself and create a compelling career story
Know yourself, know the organization and this position, and then tie these two threads together. Show them that you’ve done your research, have a high level of professional self-awareness, and are passionate about making an important contribution to achieving their goals.
When you know your own WHY story and can connect it to theirs, you’ll automatically feel confident in your ability to do the job well.
So what’s in a WHY story?
- Your values – what matters most to you
- Purpose – what gives your work meaning and motivates you
- Your strengths – the highly developed skills you love to use

- Learn to unplug
Unplugging has become more important as the lines between work life and home life blur. It would be best to have time outside of work to relax and recharge your batteries.
If you are constantly checking emails and your smartphone, you won’t turn off your brain and will soon start overworking.
To achieve your professional goals, you need to give them 100% of your energy.
When you are not working, you need to unplug and relax.
When you are working, you need to be fully present. Your work performance will improve when you learn to unplug from work.
To make this happen, make sure you don’t have technology in your bedroom or time block, or use electronic devices.

How can we cultivate this “smart luck”?
By setting hooks and planting bombs. These two practices can help us exercise our serendipity muscles at any time. Here’s how to use them.
Setting Hooks
Serendipity hooks help people become interested in you and help you figure out what you find interesting about them. The process begins when you use memorable or engaging conversation topics, whether in the park or on Zoom.
When Oli Barrett, a London-based entrepreneur, meets new people, he sets up several hooks meant to bring out commonalities with the other person.
If he is asked, “What do you do?” he will say something like, “I love connecting people, I have been active in the education sector and recently started thinking about philosophy, but what I really enjoy is playing the piano.”
That answer includes four hooks: a passion (connecting people), a calling (education), an interest (philosophy), and a hobby (playing the piano).
If he were to simply answer, “I’m in education,” the chance of others connecting the dots would be pretty small.
But by putting in multiple hooks, you increase the likelihood that the listener will respond with something like, “What a coincidence! I’m thinking of starting a company that connects people. Let’s talk!”
Hooks allow others to find and hook into something that relates to their lives or what they’re looking for, making serendipity more likely. Putting them in is easier if we’re “clear about our story”: what are we passionate about and what could we bring to the table that would be relevant to the other person?
We can also give others the opportunity to put in hooks
One way is to ask questions differently and be open to unexpected answers. Imagine being at a (virtual) conference and meeting a new person.
You might go on autopilot and ask the dreaded “So, what do you do?” That tends to back your listener into a corner.
Instead, use broader opening phrases, like “What are you interested in right now?” or “What’s your mood?”
These types of prompts can lead to serendipitous outcomes by allowing the other person to set one or more of their own hooks.
Setting hooks is not limited to private conversations. We can set hooks at events even if we are not the speaker – for example, by standing up during a Q&A session and saying something like, “Thanks for the inspiring presentation.
As someone who has just gone through [XYZ period] or who aspires to do [XYZ activity], I was surprised by what you had to say about [XYZ topic]. What would you recommend people like me do?”
This gives the entire audience a sense of how you, your life, and your career might relate to theirs. In my experience, in a group of a couple hundred people, usually several will respond to these hooks by looking for the person who set them up: “What a coincidence! I recently went through XYZ too…”
Planting Bombs
Through technology and spatial design, it’s possible to create entire containers of potential opportunities—what Mattan Griffel, an entrepreneur and adjunct professor at Columbia University, calls serendipity bombs—by connecting with groups of people.
One tactic is to write speculative emails to people you admire
I know executives who do this, and you’d be surprised how often the recipients of such unsolicited correspondence respond because they see some unexpected mutual interests or reasons to engage in a relationship.
For example, an executive might have wanted to expand on exactly the area a speculative email was about. If you can’t find an email address, consider tweeting or using LinkedIn’s InMail feature (which lets you message people you don’t know).
In many professional fields, academics are a good starting point for making connections. Their contact details are often on their university’s homepage, they often know high-level people in the industry, and they’re relatively open to making introductions.
Even with all the background information available at the click of a few keys, we can’t know everything about a person, so you’re creating new opportunities when you plant this kind of bombshell.
It’s a low-risk strategy to expand your network and foster the conditions for serendipity. Even if nothing comes of it right away, you’re on your correspondent’s radar (assuming they read your emails, that is!).
You can also plant serendipity bombs inside organizations
A traditional way is to invite someone from a different department or function to a coffee or video call.
Leaders can pair people up at random to spark unexpected conversations, and today, to help overcome the disconnect of lockdown. Our research has shown that companies and incubators have developed a host of similar methods, such as conducting post-mortems (encouraging people to share ideas that didn’t work but might work “by chance” in other contexts) and using flexible space design (e.g., placing diverse people’s mailboxes next to each other so those people “meet” each other), to increase serendipity, especially in the context of uncertainty.

Most senior executives will admit that they have reached their position not just through intelligence and hard work, but also luck.
Still, we can all do a better job of creating unexpected opportunities and connecting the dots with others so they can help us or we can help them.
